What Open Interest Tells You (and What It Doesn't)

Read it with price, never alone
Four combinations, and each tells a different story. Price up + OI up: new longs are pushing the move — a trend with fresh money behind it. Price up + OI down: shorts are covering, not new buyers — a squeeze that can fade once the fuel runs out. Price down + OI up: new shorts pressing — real selling. Price down + OI down: longs capitulating and closing — often late in a move.
Rising OI = conviction, not direction
Growing open interest means traders are adding risk, not reducing it. It confirms whatever the price is doing has commitment behind it. Falling OI into a big move is the warning sign — the move is being driven by people closing, not opening, and those tend to run out of road.
The OI-to-volume tell
A coin whose open interest is large relative to its 24h volume is heavily positioned but not actively churning — a crowded book that can move violently when it finally unwinds. It's one of the cleaner ways to spot where leverage has quietly piled up.

Is high open interest bullish or bearish?
Neither on its own. Open interest measures how much money is committed, not which direction it's leaning. You read it together with price: rising price plus rising OI means new longs are driving the move; rising price with falling OI often means shorts covering. The same OI can be bullish or bearish depending on the price context.
What's the difference between open interest and volume?
Volume is how much traded over a period; open interest is how many contracts are still open right now. A trade can be high-volume but leave OI unchanged (position passed from one trader to another), or it can open new contracts and lift OI. Volume is activity; OI is commitment.
Why is open interest shown in USD?
Raw open interest is in the base asset (e.g. BTC). Multiplying by price converts it to notional USD, so you can compare commitment across coins of very different unit prices on the same scale.
