What the Long/Short Ratio Really Tells You — and Its Traps

Positioning, not prediction
A ratio of 2.0 means twice as many are leaning long as short. That tells you where the crowd is — it does not tell you they're right. In fact, heavily crowded longs are precisely the fuel a sharp flush needs: when everyone's on one side, the violent move is usually the one that liquidates them.
Account ratio vs position ratio
Account ratio counts heads — how many accounts are net long. Position ratio counts money — how much notional is long. Retail sentiment lives in the account ratio; smart money and size live in the position ratio. When retail is piling long but the position ratio is flat or short, that divergence is often more useful than either number alone.
How to actually use it
Ignore the middle; watch the extremes and the shifts. A ratio quietly drifting is noise. A ratio snapping to a lopsided extreme — especially against a stalling price — flags a crowded trade at risk of unwinding. Pair it with funding and open interest for the full positioning picture.

FAQ
Does a high long/short ratio mean price will go up?
Not reliably — often the opposite. A very high ratio means longs are crowded, and crowded longs are exactly what a sharp drop liquidates. The ratio is a positioning gauge, best read at extremes and as context, not as a directional signal.
What's the difference between account ratio and position ratio?
Account ratio counts traders (how many accounts are net long vs short); position ratio weights by size (how much notional is long vs short). Retail crowds show up in the account ratio; a few large players can swing the position ratio. When the two disagree, that gap is itself information.
Is the long/short ratio a contrarian signal?
It can be, at extremes. When the retail account ratio gets lopsided, the crowded side is vulnerable to a squeeze. But 'crowded' can stay crowded for a while — treat it as a risk gauge, not a timing tool.
